Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is KWVT on cable?
A. KWVT is on Minet channel 10, Country Cable channel 52,  and Capitol Cable channel 7. We are also on part of the WB Cable system in Silverton and Mt. Angel. If you have another provider, call your cable provider and ask them to add KWVT and KSLM. We suggest that you be prepared to mention some of the programs you are interested in watching, especially our local programs!

Q. Will Comcast include Channel 17? ... Does Comcast have enough space to include it?
A. They continue to tell us “It’s not going to happen”.Comcast continues to say there isn't space on their system. Although our signal is available to them at no cost,  they don’t see this as a source of revenue either. The KWVT signal now covers over 796,000 households in the mid-valley and Comcast only reaches 57,000 households in Marion and Polk counties, so it’s easy to understand that they see KWVT as competition for advertising dollars. They will not add our stations unless there is a very substantial customer demand.

Q. I want to keep cable, but I want to see your stations too. I tried connecting an antenna, but couldn’t get channel 17. Any suggestions?
A. Make sure it is a UHF antenna, and try aiming the antenna toward the West Salem hills. Rescan the channels on your converter box or digital TV. Then install an A / B switch so you can switch between the antenna and cable.

Q. I keep hearing about KWVT and KSLM, but I can't see your station. What can I do?
A. We are planning new digital transmitters in Portland, Newberg, Albany, Bend and other locations. This will greatly enhance and expand our coverage. If you are not able to view our station, please rescan the channels on your converter box or digital TV.

Q. What direction would I need to aim an antenna to get your station?
A. We are presently transmitting from the Eagle Crest area of the West Salem hills. (Near the intersection of Eagle Crest Rd. and Orchard Heights Rd.)

Q. How can I find out what’s on your station?
A. KWVT and KSLM are listed on most online listing services, and KWVT is listed in the Statesman Journal TV listings. Alternatively, we have a pdf file available online: KWVT Schedule KSLM Schedule

Q. Why should I put up an antenna?
A. With the change to digital television, over the air signals offer quality far superior to cable or satellite, and many stations “multicast”, providing more programming choices.

Q. How many channels are available over the air?
A. Salem is in the coverage area of about 10 digital (DTV) stations. Since digital multicasting allows stations to air more than one program you should receive 24 or more digital program channels. Some areas may receive stations from Eugene as well.

Q. What about the Local Programming?
A. KWVT is a locally owned station, and it is our goal to provide a variety of quality local programs strengthen our communities and to generate wider interest in our station. We offer many quality local programs, and more are being developed. This is a slow process, as we do not receive government funding, nor do we have wealthy investors financing our station. Local programming is aired as businesses recognize the promotional value of sponsoring a local station, and advertise on KWVT.

Q. What about Local News?
A. It’s something we definitely want to do. You live here - we don’t have to tell you how most mid valley news is ignored by the Portland stations. We also believe KWVT is an ideal resource to get out the word about mid-valley events, community issues and local business. But, it’s also relatively expensive to produce news, so we are looking for businesses to commit to sponsor local news and weather.

Q. Why can’t I get your station in Portland?
A. It simply isn’t possible to adequately cover both Salem and Portland with one Low-Power TV station. Salem needs a truly local television station, not another Portland station pretending to serve Salem and the mid-valley.    UPDATE: We have a construction permit for a new transmitter to be located in Portland. Until then, our upgraded Salem transmitter reaches some of the Portland area.

Q. Albany-Lebanon-Corvallis don't have any local TV... You should consider raising your power or moving to Albany.
A. Channel 38 should be on the air mid 2010. Additionally, you may be able to receive our more powerful DTV station from Salem.

Q. Will you be expanding your coverage to other areas?
A. Yes. We will be expanding our coverage to areas including Eugene, Portland, Newberg, Albany, Bend and other locations.
